SportsAid offers financial and practical assistance to young British athletes and, since it was established in 1976, has helped many of the UK’s best-known sportsmen and women. The GSK lab, set up by the pharmaceuticals firm GlaxoSmithKline, offers the athletes an unrivalled chance to experience world class training facilities that are usually only available to elite athletes.

The Duchess watched as the young athletes took part in a number of advanced performance tests, the data for which was supplied to their coaches to help improve their training and competition programs. Tests included strength and power assessments, cognitive testing, body composition assessments and tests in an environmental chamber set to match the heat and humidity of Tokyo.

At one of the stations, Kate tried out some cognitive testing equipment, which tests hand-eye co-ordination. She joked that it was one thing she could do when pregnant.

The Duchess kept her make-up natural, applying just a hint of blush to match her wintery look. She had her brunette hair styled into loose curls that fell across her shoulders.
