They were raising money for St Andrews University in Scotland, where they both met and fell in love as students. Proceeds will fund scholarships and bursaries for under-privileged students, as well as new sports and media facilities.

The royal couple were met on the museum's steps by an honor guard of fellow St Andrews alumni dressed in the university's traditional red gowns and officials wearing kilts. Then they were escorted to a reception in the museum's Velez Blanco patio, where they mingled with the other 450 guests.

They later dined in the Temple of Dendur, a vast room decorated with statues of Egyptian gods that was built specifically to house an Egyptian temple built just before the birth of Christ. The sandstone temple was given to the U.S. in its entirety in 1965.

The dinner featured a guest appearance by the US comedian and chat show host Seth Meyers, who gave the toast. Other guests included Princess Eugenie, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Mary-Kate Olsen, the actress turned fashion designer who is one half of the Olsen twins, and her partner Olivier Sarkozy, half-brother of the former French president.

Kate shopped her closet and looked resplendent in her petrol silk, floor-length Jenny Packham gown ($5,655), which she has worn twice before, first at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds dinner in October 2013, and then at the National Portrait Gallery in April. The cut of the dress meant the Duchess's baby bump was more obvious than at previous engagements, when she had opted for looser maternity wear.

This time around, the Duchess paired her gown with a set of gorgeous chandelier emerald-and-diamond earrings and a matching bracelet, both of which were a private gift.
