The Cambridge's met the Singaporean leader and his wife for the first time in September 2012 when they traveled to Singapore as part of their Diamond Jubilee tour. On a side note, President Tan is the first Singaporean president to make a state visit to the UK.

After tea, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge escorted the Tans, by car, to Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall for the ceremonial welcome with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh formally greeted the foreign leader and his wife at Horse Guards Parade where Dr. Tan inspected a guard of honor of 96 servicemen and officers from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards.

After the parade, everyone traveled back to the Palace in a carriage procession. The Queen travelled with Dr. Tan in the first carriage - the Diamond Jubilee State Coach - and Philip with Mrs. Tan in the second carriage - the Australian State Coach.
