On Sunday, we got our first glimpse of the Cambridge's as a family of four when they arrived on foot for Princess Charlotte's christening at St. Mary Magdalene Church on the Queen’s 20,000-acre Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

A crowd of 3,500 well-wishers lined the route to the chapel waving Union Jack flags and cheering as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge strolled through the grounds of the royal estate to the church.

Nine-week old Charlotte was christened at a short, intimate ceremony attended by just 22 official guests including the Queen, Prince Philip, other close family members and Princess Charlotte's five godparents. The service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Right Rev Justin Welby, and supported by the Reverend Canon Jonathan Riviere, the rector of the Sandringham group of parishes.

Charlotte and George’s full-time live-in nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo was on hand at the church to help out.

The christening had a historical link to Diana, Princess of Wales as the church is also where her christening was held on August 30, 1961.

Princess Charlotte was christened with the ornate 174-year-old silver gilt Lily Font (the bowl is a large, open lily bloom, hence its name, and it is decorated with lilies, ivy and cherubs) filled water from the River Jordan where Christ was baptized. For the first time ever, the Lily Font was brought to Norfolk from the Tower of London where it is usually on show as part of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. Alongside the Lily Font was a christening ewer, made of solid silver and similarly gilded, which dates from 1735 and was made for the christening of George III.

The font, which dates back to 1840, was commissioned by Queen Victoria (she paid £401 10s) to prevent her family being tarnished by association with the illegitimate children of Charles II. Since then, it has been used for almost every royal christening (we know it was not used at Princess Eugenie's christening).

After the short half an hour service, the royals began emerging from the church and made their way back to Sandringham where guests were treated to sandwiches, tea, and slices Princess Charlotte's christening cake. which is one of the eight tiers from the fruitcake served at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding in 2011.
