The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose to release four photographs in all – one formal family shot and three more intimate snaps.

All the pictures were taken at Sandringham House, the Queen's private Norfolk residence by Mario Testino. He famously photographed Princess Diana for Vanity Fair magazine just months before she died in 1997 and also took the official photographs of William and Kate's engagement.

The formal family photo was shot in the Drawing Room. It shows the Queen and three generations of royal successors - Prince Charles, Prince William and, of course, George.
