On Wednesday, the Duchess of Cambridge showed no signs of slowing down as she arrived for two engagements in the windy seaside resort of Margate, Kent.

Hundreds of people turned out to greet her as she made her first stop at the Turner Contemporary gallery, an affiliate of London's National Portrait Gallery, which opened in 2011.

The royal - who is patron of the National Portrait Gallery - visited the "Self: Image and Identity" exhibition, which includes the last self-portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, recently acquired for the nation by the National Portrait Gallery through a public appeal with The Art Fund.

Upon her arrival, Kate met trustees, dignitaries and Evelyn Stern, wife of renowned architect Sir David Chipperfield who designed the gallery, before being led to the entrance of the Turner.

Once inside, the Duchess was given a tour of the gallery. As she toured, she met artists whose works are in the exhibition. One artist she met was a photographer from Dublin, Trish Morrissey. Her photo was shot on Kingsgate Bay, showing the artist with a family sitting on the beach in summer.

Other works on display included a sculpture called "Scarecrow" by local artist John Davies, a striking life-size cast of a prone man sprawled on the floor called "Self portrait as a drowned man" by Jeremy Millar, and Sir Anthony van Dyck's self-portrait.

Kate toured the studios, including a print studio, project space and more general workspaces. She also viewed an exhibition featuring photomontages of local personalities and met artists in residence to hear about their work with communities within Cliftonville.

The Duchess of Cambridge sported an eye-catching black and ivory Dalmatian print coat (£169) by British label Hobbs (sold out). The collarless coat was cut just above the knee, featured two front pockets, and showcased her blossoming baby bump.
