The event is the one day when the entire regimental family comes together and also where veterans proudly display their medals on their suits along with a small contingent of cadets.

The royal couple arrived at the military base by chauffeur driven car and were greeted by the commanding officer 1st Battalion Irish Guards, Lieutenant Colonel Ed Boanas.

Families and friends of the soldiers looked on as Kate stepped forward to present traditional sprigs of shamrocks to the officers and warrant officers, who in turn issued it along the ranks. This is a century-old tradition, which was began in 1901 by Queen Alexandra, the wife of the Edward VII. The role has been previously carried out by the Queen Mother and the Princess Royal.

The Duchess also honored the regimental mascot, a 19-month old Irish wolf hound Domhnall, with his own bunch of the well known plant. Kate stroked his head before she pinned some shamrock to his collar.
